Contemporary Performance Practice

"Art is the most gentle way to resist. Not only it captures the ideology of the time, but also serves as the guide to critical thinking for our next generation"

A political momentum is conceived through gathering people who share the same pursuit in work and life, regardless of whether the gathering itself is politically connected. As Václav Havel stated, a totalitarian regime would use whatever means possible to suppress people's assembly, however, certain cultural activities would survive. Taverns are the quintessence of Czech beer culture where massive underground democratic assemblies happened, whereas political debates and bantering became the soil that gave birth to civil society. Theatre requires regular rehearsals and teamwork, it demands the artists themselves to possess personal opinions and critical thinking simultaneously. The essence of collective arts has already formulated the paradigm of civil society and further cultivates its prerequisites, the freedom and awareness to assemble, that could unite the people for future democratic movements.

From a curriculum perspective, socially engaged arts would be the perfect medium for artists to connect with people who have not had arts education to form a political power by discussing, responding and intervening social norms with different art mediums. As a student artist, I would like to contributes to Hong Kong’s cultural heritage and democratic development by making performing arts accessible to the general public. Other than uniting people, the arts itself is the tenderest revolution, defends and preserves a generation's values in a long-drawn-out war by leading us to see the world differently. Therefore, I will make use of the scholarship to equip myself to be an all-rounded artist, to attend masterclasses, visit art festivals and run an arts community which intersects democratic practice.

Journalism

"I will be continuously driven by my determination and the identity of Hong Konger to achieve my goals."

Being born in an uncertain time carries certain responsibilities. Like many others of my generation, I have experienced first-hand many of the challenges that lie ahead for Hong Kong. For this reason, it is incumbent upon me to do what I can to help my homeland overcome the challenges it faces in the future.

One way in which I can contribute is by promoting HK's cultural heritage and democratic development in the UK. For example, as a member of the International Student Advisory Board, I would like to use a portion of my scholarship to hold a screening of unauthorised democratic films in HK in order to educate more local and international students about what has happened to the city. This will help foster a greater sense of community among both local and international people and will help keep HK's spirit alive for the future.

In terms of personal academic goals, I intend to use my scholarship to develop a deeper understanding of journalistic issues during my time at the University of Leeds. Throughout my study, I would like to equip myself for the role of being a storyteller and gain hands-on experience on how to convey a message. After graduation, I want to be a journalist focusing on reporting international politics and social injustice news so that I can arouse the audience's attention to what is happening in HK, as well as other less democratic countries.

Despite all the dilemmas happening in HK, I believe the most important thing is to gather the people, make them connected and concerned, and then respond. Being a journalist might be a long-term goal, but I believe my determination and my identity as a Hongkonger will keep urging me towards my goal.

Where is HongKonger, where is Hong Kong.

Social Work

"The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart."

I am incredibly honored to write this speech. I am particularly appreciative of Bonham Tree Scholarship for selecting me as a recipient of your scholarship. I feel very privileged and touched to receive your support. As an international student coming to the United Kingdom without the company of family, I cherish all the kindness from other Hongkongers.

'The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart.' This is one of my friends, who is a famous activist and is now in jail, always tells me not to be frustrated by what he is suffering, but to be mindful of what we can still strive for. His words bring me the courage to fight the darkness no matter how the days tough. Every cloud has a silver lining. I am confident in promoting the identity and culture of Hongkongers without fear even if I am a newcomer to the United Kingdom.

I have already been involved in projects promoting the identity of Hongkongers, and Hong Kong’s cultural heritage. I am exceedingly grateful to have the scholarship to support the balance of my study and involvement in the projects. In the future, I foresee myself chasing after my passion, doing what I can do to the best of my abilities, and using my unique talents to contribute meaningfully to the common welfare of our Hongkongers.

The choice of coming to the United Kingdom is not the way I escape hopelessness; is the way I improve myself to fight powerlessness. I thank you again for providing me with the chance not just for having the support of a scholarship but to promote the message to Hongkongers in the United Kingdom.

Philosophy and Physics

"As a student of Philosophy and Physics, I wish to continue to explore political and moral philosophy, which will enable me to reflect on the political system and societal norms in Hong Kong, better equipping me to make a change."

As a student of Philosophy and Physics, I wish to continue to explore political and moral philosophy, which will enable me to reflect on the political system and societal norms in Hong Kong, better equipping me to make a change. I also hope that my science education background can not only allow me to gain a deeper understanding of the universe, but also provide me with the skills of logical reasoning and a passion for seeking the truth.

With the scholarship, I will continue to promote the welfare of Hong Kong students in the U.K., as well as the preservation of Hong Kong culture - especially in overseas Hongkongers, through different journalistic platforms, social media, and organisations. In the long run, I hope to contribute to Hong Kong's democratic development through education - I believe we must revolutionise the education system in Hong Kong such that the next generation become independent thinkers who can reason logically for the benefit of the society. This scholarship is my first step in achieving that in the future.

Once again, thank you to all the judges and Bonham Tree Aid for providing me with this opportunity, and a huge thank you to my family for always providing me with their unconditional support. I will do my best to fulfill my role in society.
